‘Wh–’Question Words

% ‘Wh- ’question words are used to ask questions.

%  What is used for things, animals and people.

       e.g. What colour is your new bicycle?

              What do you want to be when you grow up?

%  Who is used for people.

                e.g. Who is the author of this book?

                       Who came to your house last night?

         %  Where is used for places.

               e.g. Where is Taman Sentosa?

                      Where do you live?

         %  When is used for time.

                e.g. When will you go to the library?

                       When is your birthday?

         %  Why is used to ask for a reason.

                e.g. Why were you absent yesterday?

                       Why did you leave the door open?

  %  How is used to ask about the way something is done or the  

           condition of someone.

           e.g. How do you make mango pudding?

                  How are you feeling today?

  %  Which is used to imply selection.

           e.g. Which is Natasha’s bag?

                  Which watch do you like?

Conjunctions

·      Conjunctions are used to link words, phrases or sentences.

·      And links parallel words or sentences.

           e.g.  They have buns for breakfast. They have eggs for breakfast.

·      Or links sentences where choices are given.

          e.g.   Do you want coffee?

                   Do you want tea?

·      But links contrasting sentences.

           e.g.   My grandmother can sysle. My grandmother cannot swim.

·      because shows reason for an action or situation.

·      So shows the result of a cause.

@      A, an and the are articles.

@      We use a and an to talk about a singular countable noun. The countable noun can be a person, an animal or a thing.

e.g.    a veterinarian, a bird, a plate

                    an old man, an owl, an oar

@      We use the when:

we speak of the same thing again;

e.g.         My mother baked a cheese cake. The cake was tasty.

we are clear about the person or thing that we are talking about;

e.g.         We bought the storybook on the table last night.

there is only one such thing.

e.g.         The sun sets in the west.

@      Articles are not used:

when we are talking about an uncountable noun in general;

e.g.         Mrs Foong likes (-) coggee.

 (b)    before the name of a game;

           e.g.        The girls play (-) netball in the evening.

(C)    before the name of a meal;

e.g.         I had fried rice for (-) dinner.

     (d)    before proper nouns.
