The Jackfruit

The jackfruit is a large elongated fruit. It is green and prickly on the outside. Once cut opened, you will see its yellow flesh. It also has a strong odour.

The jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. There can be as many as 100 seeds inside a single jackfruit. A jackfruit takes about three to eight months to ripen. Its skin changes from light green to yellowish-brown when it ripens.

The flesh inside is sweet and can be eaten in a variety of ways. Besides eating the ripe flesh, dried slices of the unripe fruit can also be eaten. Sometimes, the ripe fruit is fermented to make strong liquor. Jackfruit seeds can also be eaten. They are either boiled or roasted.
